Shri. Vella Eacharan, Congress leader, was born at Alathur on July 9, 1918 as the son of Shri. Vella.
After school education and co-operative training from Co-operative Institute, Madras, he was in
Government service during 1943-1951. However, he left Government service and entered politics as
an active worker of the INC. Actively involved in Harijan upliftment and Bhoodan work, Shri. Eacharan
later served as a member of the first and second Lok Sabha.
Shri. Eacharan was subsequently elected to Kerala Legislative Assembly in 1970, from Trithala
constituency and in 1977, from Wandoor constituency .
Shri. Eacharan was the Minister for Harijan Welfare and Community Development from 25.9.1971 to
25.3.1977, in the Ministry headed by Shri. C. Achutha Menon.
He had also held several high positions in different walks of life including serving as President of
Depressed class League, Malabar and All India Working Committee member, besides being a member
of KPCC and AICC.
Smt. Lekshmi is his wife and they have three daughters.
Shri. Vella Eacharan expired on 11..2..1980.
The Assembly paid its homage to him on 18.2.1980.
