V.K. VELAPPAN

 

Shri.V.K. Velappan, senior Congress Leader, was born in September 1898 at Vaikom. After his school education he had joined the Ernakulam Maharaja’s College in 1919, but had however to discontinue his studies.

He later turned to social and political activities and had been elected to the Sree Moolam Praja Sabha twice in 1929 and 1931, and to the Travancore Legislative Assembly during 1933 –37. He was elected to the Travancore Legislative Assembly again in 1944, and continued upto 1947.

Shri. Velappan became elected from the Vazhur constituency to the second Kerala Legislative Assembly in 1960 as a Congress candidate. From 22.02.1960 to 26..08..1962 he served as the Minister for Health and Electricity in the Ministry headed by Shri. Pattom Thanu Pillai .

In the course of a long public life , Shri Vellappan was also Municipal Councillor in the Vaikom Municipality and its Chairman from 1938 to 1952 and again from 1956 to 1960. He had also been associated with the activities of the NSS, along with Shri Mannath Padmanabhan.

Shri. V.K. Velappan expired on 26..8..1962 while serving as Minister.

The Assembly paid its homage to him on October 3, 1962.
