Shri. U.A. Beeran, senior Muslim League leader, was born at Kottakkal on March 9, 1925 as the son
of Shri. Ahamed.
After serving in the Indian Army during the forties, and later working in a British engineering firm in
Bombay in the early fifties, he joined the Muslim League and became its Kozhikode District Secretary,
and later State Secretary.
Shri. Beeran became elected to the Assembly in 1970, 1977, 1980, 1982 and 1991 as a Muslim
League candidate.
Shri. Beeran served as the Minister for Education and Social Welfare from 27.1.1978 to 3.10.1978
in the Ministry headed by Shri. A.K. Antony. Again, from 24.5.1982 to 25.3.1987, he was
the Minister for Food and Civil Supplies in the Ministry headed by Shri. K. Karunakaran.
He was also the Chairman, Library Advisory Committee during 1970-71, House Committee during
1979-81 and Committee on Subordinate Legislation during 1991- 94.
Shri. Beeran has served as Director, State Co-operative Bank, and Chairman, Kerala Fishermen Welfare Corporation. A former Sub Editor and Asst. Editor of “Chandrika” and a gifted writer, he has also
authored “Arab World and Europe” besides publishing other books and articles. He had also served for
sometime as State Executive Member, “All Kerala Sahitya Parishad”.
Smt. A.P. Katheejabi is his wife and they have four sons and two daughters.
Shri. U.A. Beeran passed away on 31.5.2001.
The Assembly paid its homage to him on 5.7.2001.
