T.K. RAMAKRISHNAN

 

Shri. T.K. Ramakrishnan, veteran Communist leader , was born in 1922 at Eroor as the son of Shri. Kunjaman.


Shri. Ramakrishnan took to active politics very early in life, joining the INC in 1941. He joined the Communist Party in 1942. He had been imprisoned in Viyyur Central Prison for six months in 1950 as political prisoner and had been detained under DIR in 1965. He had been the President of Tripunithura Panchayat, in 1954.


Shri. Ramakrishnan became elected to the Ist and 2nd KLA from Kanayannur constituency as Communist Party Member. He represented Thripunithura constituency in the 3rd, 5th and 6th KLA. He was elected to 8th KLA from Kottayam through a bye election held on 3-6-1987. In the 9th and 10th KLA also he represented Kottayam constituency.


Shri. T.K. Ramakrishnan served as the Home Minister from 25-1-1980 to 20-10-1981 in the Ministry headed by E.K.Nayanar. He was the Minister for Co-operation and Fisheries from 2-4-1987 to 17-6-1991. Again from 20-5-1996 to 13-5-2001 he was the Minister for Fisheries and Rural
Development in the Nayanar Ministry.

In 1979 during the period of 5th KLA, he had acted as the Leader of Opposition for a short period. He also became Opposition Chief Whip during 9th KLA from 1991 to 1996. He was the Chairman of the Committee on Assurances from 1979 to 1981.


During a long public life, he has served as the Member of CPI(M) State and Central Committees, Joint Secretary of All India Kissan Sabha and Secretary of Kottayam District Committee of CPM. He has also a remarkable stint as Deputy leader of CPI (M) Legislature Party.


His wife is Smt. Gouri and they have one son and four daughters.
