Shri. Pinarayi Vijayan, veteran CPI(M) leader, was born on 21.3.1944 as the son of Shri. Koran at
Pinarayi.
A graduate, whose forray into the political field was through the Kerala Students’ Federation, Shri.
Vijayan later became its District Secretary and State President. Besides, he has been the State
President and Secretary, KSYF, District Secretary of CPI (M), Kannur and President, State Co-operative
Bank.
During the course of an eventful political career, Shri. Vijayan had undergone imprisonment, in connection
with the “Food Agitation”, during 1965. He had to undergo imprisonment again, under MISA, and in
the Cannanore Central Prison, for nearly 16 months, and had also to endure brutal police assault,
many a time.
Shri. Pinarayi Vijayan became elected to the 4th Kerala Legislative Assembly in 1970 from Kuthuparamba
Constituency, which he again represented in 1977 and 1991.
In 1996 he got elected to the 10th KLA
contesting from Payyannur Constituency. Shri. Pinarayi Vijayan held the portfolio of Electricity and Co-operation from 20.5.1996 to 19.10.1998
in the Ministry headed by Shri. E.K. Nayanar.
He had also been a member of the State Secretariat of CPI (M) and has also served as Secretary,
Parliamentary Party of CPI(M).
Shri. Pinarayi Vijayan is presently the State Secretary, Kerala and Polit Bureau Member of CPI (M).
Smt. T. Kamala is his wife, and they have one son and one daughter.
