Shri. P.R. Kurup, veteran Socialist leader, was born as the son of Shri.Govindan Nambiar on
30-9-1915.
A teacher by profession, he had participated in several teacher’s movements and also in the Kattampalli
struggle and struggle of Estate labour union. He had also been dismissed from service in 1945,
because of his political affiliations. Getting initiated into politics through the Congress Party in 1935,
he got attracted to the ideals of the Sociality Party later.
Shri. Kurup subsequently contested from Koothuparamba constituency in the elections held to the
first KLA, as Praja Socialist Party candidate, and got elected. In the 2nd KLA also, he represented
Koothuparamba constituency, again as a PSP member.He was elected from Peringalam constituency
to the 3rd KLA as SSP member, and continued to represent Peringalam constituency in the 5th, 8th and
10th Kerala Legislative Assembly.
Shri. P.R. Kurup was Minister for Irrigation and Co-operation in the E.M.S.Ministry from 6-3-67 to
21-10-69 and the Minister for Forests and Transport, in the Nayanar Ministry from 20-5-96 to
11-1-99.
He was the Chairman of the Committee on Private Members Bills and Resolutions from 1957 to
1958 and the House Committee from 1987 to 1989.
Shri Kurup had also served as President of Malabar Kisan Panchayat for some time.
His wife is Smt. K.P. Leela and they have 4 daughters and 4 sons, including Shri K.P. Mohanan,
Member of the 11th KLA.
Shri P.R. Kurup expired on 17-1-2001.
The Assembly paid its homage to him on 16-2-2001.
