Shri. P.P. Thankachan , successful lawyer and Parliamentarian, was born on July 29, 1939 at Angamali
in Ernakulam District, as the son of the Rev. Father Paulose.
As one actively involved in extra curricular activities apart from studies, right from student days, Shri.
Thankachan had won the Best Students’ Award of SH College, Thevara , Cochin , during 1956-57.
A graduate who later groomed into a practicing lawyer of repute, Shri. Thankachan also holds a
Diploma in Public Administration.
In 1968 , Shri. Thankachan became the youngest Municipal Chairman in the country, on his getting
elected to the Perumbavoor Municipal Council, holding the post till 1980. During 1980-85, he also
served as the Leader of Opposition in the same Municipal Council.
Again, holding the Presidentship of various trade unions in the state, Shri. Thankachan also served as
the President, Ernakulam DCC , from 1977 to1989.
Shri. Thankachan became elected to the 7th KLA in 1982 and also in the subsequent Assemblies of
1987, 1991 and 1996 , all from the Perumbavoor constituency, under the Congress ticket. He was
also the Secretary INC (I) during 1987-91. Shri. Thankachan was Minister for Agriculture from 3.5.1995 to 20.5.1996 , in the Ministry headed
by Shri. A.K. Antony. From 1996 to 2001, Shri. Thankachan held the Office of Opposition Chief Whip
in the Tenth Kerala Legislative Assembly.
Earlier, Shri. Thankachan had also graced the Chair of Speaker of Assembly in the 9th KLA from
1.7.1991 to 3.5.1995.
In a career spanning almost four decades, Shri. Thankachan had served in different capacities in all
walks of life, including serving as Chairman, Kerala Market Fed and as Vice President of KPCC during
2001 -04. He was appointed Acting President of KPCC in 2004, and later became Convenor of the
UDF .
Smt. T.V. Thankamma is his wife, and they have one son and two daughters.
