Shri. P. K. Kunju, a leading figure in the political history of Travancore and later of Kerala, was born on 5th August 1905. An intermediate from Aligarh Muslim University, he had plunged into active politics while in high school. He had also taken part in the historic Vaikom Sathyagraha .

A member of Sree Moolam Assembly of Travancore from 1937 to 1947, he was later elected to Travancore Assembly in 1948 and was the Whip of the parliamentary party of All Travancore Joint political Congress. And in the election held after the integration of Travancore - Cochin, he was elected as a member in 1954 and became the Minister for Labour, Medical and Local bodies in the TCLA during 1954-1955.

Shri. P.K. Kunju had served also as the President of the Travancore-Cochin Muslim League in 1952. When the Praja Socialist party was formed, he became its Treasurer from 1957 to 1961. Shri. Kunju became elected to the 2nd KLA subsequently from Krishnapuram constituency, as a PSP member. In the 3rd KLA he was elected from Kayamkulam as a member of SSP. From 6-3-1967 to 13-5-1969, Shri. Kunju was the Minister for Finance in the Ministry headed by Shri. E.M.S. Namboodirippad. It was during his stewardship, that lottery was introduced in the State.

During a long public life, Shri Kunju was also the Chief editor of ‘Rajyabhimani’ and ‘Swaraj’ weeklies and the daily ‘Kerala Janata’. The Chairman of the Kerala Wakf Board, Shri P.K. Kunju was the founder of M.S.M. Arts and Science College, Kayamkulam.

Shri P. K. Kunju expired at the age of 74 on 23-6-1979.

The Assembly paid its homage to him on 5-10-1979.
