Shri. N.K. Balakrishnan , senior leader of Socialist Party, was born at Nileshwar on July 1, 1919 as the son of Shri. K. Ambu. Resigning his job in the Co-operative Department of Madras Government, he joined Quit India Movement in 1942. A founder member of the Congress Socialist Party in Kerala, Shri. Balakrishnan later became a member of PSP State Committee.

Shri. Balakrishnan became elected to the Kerala Assembly, in 1967 and 1970, from Hosdurg constituency. He represented Uduma constituency in the 5th KLA as a PSP member.

Shri. Balakrishnan was the Minister for Health and Co-operation from 4.10.1970 to 25.3.1977 in the Ministry headed by Shri. C. Achutha Menon.

Shri. Balakrishnan has also served at different times as Chairman, Kerala State Ware housing Corporation,

Member, Kerala University Senate, President, Kannur District Co-operative Bank and Director, Kannur Co-operative Spinning Mills.

Smt. C. Narayani is his wife, and they have one son and three daughters.
Shri. N.K. Balakrishnan expired on 15.4.1996.

The Assembly paid its homage to him on 29.7.1996.
