Shri. N.E. Balaram, renowned Communist leader, was born on November 20, 1919.
A teacher in Peravoor UP School before entering politics in 1934 as a Congress Worker, he later joined
the Congress Socialist party, and shortly afterwards the CPI in 1939. He was actively associated also
with Kisan and labour movements, and had been imprisoned several times, for participating in various
agitations.
Shri. Balaram became elected to the Assembly in 1957 and 1960 from Mattanur as a CPI candidate.
In 1970 he was again elected from Tellicherry.
Shri. Balaram was the Minister for Industries from 4..10..1970 to 24..9..1971 in the Ministry headed
by Shri. C. Achutha Menon.
Shri. Balaram has served for sometime as Secretary, CPI State Council, Member, CPI National council
and Central Executive Committee.
He had put his stamp in the literary field also, and was the author of 'Indiyayude Piravi', 'Dhanasastra
Silpikal', 'Moonu Internationalukalude Charithram', 'Idathupaksha Communism', 'Adhunika Muthalalithwam' and 'History of the Communist Party of India'.
His wife is Smt. Pankajakshy and they have two sons and two daughters.
Shri. Balaram was a member of Rajya Sabha during 1985-94, when his end came on 16..7..1994,
while serving as an MP.
The Assembly paid its homage to him on 18..7..1994.
