Shri. Lonappan Nambadan, a teacher turned political leader, was born on 13th November 1935 at
Perampra, as the son of Shri. Kuriappan. After passing SSLC and TTC, he took to the teaching profession,
before he became active in public life.
While a student, he had participated in humanitarian and religious activities. He was also interested in
arts and cultural activities and was awarded prizes for elocution and drama, and later, he had acted in
a film which bagged State Awards.
Shri. Nambadan’s initiation into politics was through the Indian National Congress. Later, he joined
Kerala Congress and became its President, Kodakara Constituency Committee. He had taken part in
agitations of teachers, agricultural workers and labour unions.
Shri. Lonappan Nambadan became elected to KLA in 1977, 1980 and 1982 from Kodakara constituency
as a Kerala Congress Candidate and in 1987, 1991 and 1996 from Irinjalakuda constituency as an
Independent candidate backed by the LDF.
He had served as the Minister for Transport from 25-1-1980 to 20-10-1981 in the E.K. Nayanar
Ministry and the Minister for Housing from 2-4-1987 to 17-6-1991, also in the Nayanar Ministry. In 2004 he became elected also to the Lok Sabha from the Mukundapuram constituency.
During a long public life, Shri Nambadan served as the Member, State Parliamentary Board, State Vice
Chairman of Kerala Congress and Secretary and the President of its Thrissur District Committee. He
was the President of Catholic Congress, Thrissur Diocese, Secretary, Catholic Union, Thrissur and
Member, Pastoral Council of Irinjalakuda Diocese. He also served as a Member of Kodakara Panchayat.
Smt. Annie is his wife and they have one son and two daughters.
