Professor JOSEPH MUNDASSERY

 

Professor Joseph Mundassery, besides being a great figure in Malayalam literature, has also a place in history as the first Minister for Education in the State of Kerala. He was born on 17th July 1903, as the son of Shri Kunjuvareed and Smt. Elachar.

A former Professor having a long association with the education field, he had taught in many colleges, before he was drawn into the political arena. Shri. Mundassery had also served as a member of Travancore-Cochin Legislative Assembly from 1949 to 1956.

Shri. Joseph Mundassery was elected to the first KLA from Manalur Constituency as a member of the Communist Party of India. During his stint as Minister for Education and Co-operation in the EMS Ministry from 5.4.1957 to 31.7.1959, he was responsible for many innovative legislations in the field of education. And coming from an educationist, these reforms gave a new lease of life to the higher education sector in the State.

Though he was again elected to the 4th KLA from Trichur Constituency as an independent candidate, he resigned on 22.9.1971, to take over as the Vice Chancellor of Cochin University of Science and Technology.

As an author of repute and as a literary critic, Professor Mundassery’s contribution to the Malayalam literature was also substantial. He was the editor of ‘Navajeevan’ and ‘Prajamithram’ dailies and various literary journals. Besides, he was a Member of Kendra Sahithya Academy and Kerala Sahithya Academy.

Prof. Mundassery received the titles ‘Sahitya Kusala’ and ‘Sahitya Nipuna’ from the Maharaja of Cochin. His literary accomplishments include books such as ‘Professor’, ‘Konthayil ninnum Kurisilekku’, ‘China- Forward’, ‘Vayanasalayil’, ‘Manushya kathanugayikal’ and an autobiography ‘Kozhinja Ilakal’. He had also acted as Member of World Peace Council and had served as a Member of the State Planning Board.
His wife was Smt. Katherene and they have 4 sons and 3 daughters.

Professor Mundassery expired at the age of seventy four on 25 October 1977.

The Assembly paid its homage to him on February 9, 1978.
