Shri. C.M. Sundaram, senior political leader was born on Ist July 1919 as the son of Shri. C.S.
Mahadeva Iyer.
Entering Politics though students Congress he had participated in Quit India Movement, and had been
an active worker in Congress Volunteer Sanghom. Later joining the Socialist Party, he also participated
in agitations of Greater Bombay Tenants Union, Bombay Dock Worker’s Union and Hotel Mazdoor
Sabha.
In the early 1950s, he worked for the Welfare of Tribals in Akamalavaram and organised several trade
unions for welfare of working class people like FACT Mazdoor Sabha, Theatre Mazdoor Sabha and
Rubber Estate Mazdoor Sabha.
As one who took initative in organising Co-operative Societies , he was instrumental also in the formation
of Palghat District Auto Rikshaw Drivers Co-operative Society, Palghat District Fibre workers Industrial
Co-operative Society and Malampuzha Girijan Service Co-operative Society.
He had also been elected in 1966 and 1968 to Palghat Municipality and had also served as its Vice
Chairman.
Shri. Sundaram became elected to the KLA in 1977 from Palghat constituency and remained a
member from 5th KLA to 8th KLA consecutively as PSP candidate. In the 9th KLA, he represented the
same constituency as a Congress candidate.
In the Ministry headed by Shri. K. Karunakaran, Shri Sundaram also served as the Minister for Local
Administration from 28..12..1981 to 17..3..1982. Again in the Ministry headed by Shri. K. Karunakaran,
he was the Minister for Local Administration from 24..5..1982 to 25..3..1987.
During a long public career Shri. Sundaram had served also as the Chairman of Subordinate Legislation
Committee from 1979 to 1981 and Assurance Committee from 1977 to 1979.
In addition, he held important positions in different Government Committees like State Tribal Advisory
Committee, District Development Council and Industrial Relations Committee for Agricultural Workers
(Palghat) .
He also served for some time as the Chairman of PSP State Committee.
His wife is Smt. C.N. Thailambal and they have two daughters.
