Born on May 10, 1946 as the son of Shri. D. Varkey and Smt. Rosa, Shri. K.V. Thomas, a Chemistry
Teacher by profession who later became a Professor, has put his imprint in the political field as well.
He was instrumental in organising labourers under the banner of INTUC and was the leader of many
trade unions in the Cochin industrial area.
Prof. Thomas was elected to Lok Sabha also, thrice from Ernakulam constituency in 1984, ’89 and
’91 as the member of Indian National Congress.
Prof. Thomas later got elected to the 11th KLA from Ernakulam constituency as an INC member
and served as Minister handling the Portfolio of Fisheries, Tourism from 26-5-2001 to 29-8-2004
with additional charge of Excise from 11-2-2004 in the Ministry headed by Shri. A.K. Antony.
Prof. Thomas was likewise, the General Secretary of Ernakulam DCC from 1978 to 1987, and
President from 1987 to 2001. A prominent leader of INTUC in the State as its Organising Secretary
during 1978-1984, he later became its General Secretary during 1984-93. He was the Treasurer of
KPCC during 1992-97. He was also Member, Board of Directors of Cochin International Airport during 1992-96 and Member,
Board of Directors of Marine Products Export Development Authority from 1984 to 1996 and since
2001. He also served as Member of Courts of Jawaharlal Nehru University and Pondicherry University.

An active member of KPCC from 1977 and of AICC from 1992, Prof. Thomas is also Member, Kerala
State Congress (I) Election Committee (from 1996) AICC observer to Lakshadweep (from 2000) and
President, All Kerala Ration Dealer’s Association
As one having a flair for letters, he has published books on his life and native place titled ‘Ente
Kumbalanghi’ and 'Kumbalangikku Sesham'.
Smt. Sherly Thomas is his wife and they have two sons and one daughter.
