The Cabinet has decided to increase the maintenance grants of aided schools.
The annual grant for lower primary and upper primary schools will be increased to Rs.60 a student. This will be subject to a limit of Rs.30,000 a year in the case of primary schools and Rs.40,000 a year in the case of upper primary schools. The grant for high schools will go up to Rs.80 a student subject to a limit of Rs.60,000 a year.
Briefing media persons after a meeting of the Cabinet here on Wednesday, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said the present rates of grants were fixed 50 years ago. It had remained Rs.3.25 a student for lower and upper primary schools and Rs.5 a student for high schools. There had been demands from managements to raise the grant.
