Fancy numbers for vehicles – New norms..

Fancy registration marks of motor vehicles in the State are to become dearer. The Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) has decided to hike the fee steeply and introduce ‘auction-cum-tender’ procedure to check the misuse of existing norms and to prevent loss to the exchequer.

Motorists will have to shelve out a minimum of Rs.1 lakh for the first registration mark of all series starting from KL 01-60, excluding KL-15 that had been allotted to the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC). If there are more applicants for a particular number, the registration mark will be auctioned and will be awarded to the highest bidder.

“Henceforth, those applying for the fancy registration mark will have to purchase a vehicle. This has been done as it was found that many were grabbing the fancy numbers for a meagre amount without purchasing vehicles and selling it for a premium,” a top MVD official said.

Six slabs have been proposed by clubbing together the notified fancy registration numbers. A non-fancy registration mark will now cost Rs.3,000. The numbers 777, 999, 3333, 4444, 5000, 5555, 7777, 9999 in slab two will now cost Rs.50,000. In the third slab, 5,7, 9, 333, 786, 1000, 1111, 1818, 2727, 3000, 3636, 4545, 5005, 5050, 6666, 7000, 7007, 8181, 8888, 9000, 9009 and 9090 have been included at a price of Rs.25,000.

The numbers 2, 3, 11, 99, 100, 111, 123, 313, 444, 500, 555, 666, 900, 909, 1001, 1234, 1717, 1881, 2000, 2222, 4455, 5454, 6000, 6363, 7272 will cost Rs.10,000. For Rs.5,000, the numbers available are 2007, 2500, 2425, 2700, 2772, 3456, 4000, 4500, 5353, 5445, 6060, 7070, 7117, 7171, 7227, 8008, 8080 and 8118.

The reservation of the registration mark can be made from among the numbers in a unit that will be assigned to each Regional Transport Office/Sub Regional Transport Office for one week by the State Transport Commissioner. This will be done on the basis of the quantum of registration in each office and also for allotted numbers pending from previous weeks. Those submitting applications for fancy numbers will have to use the prescribed application and submit the TR 5 receipt after paying the fee, DD for not less than half of the amount quoted, temporary registration certificate and address proof.

The draft of the rules to amend the Kerala Motor Vehicle Rules 1989 has been made public for raising objections and to make suggestions. “We will look into suggestions and plug loopholes before finalising it and notifying it in the gazette,’ he added.
